Some notes on Mathew Gregg (1752-1832)-Nancy Gipson (died 1832)

Sometime before 1787 he and his family joined his brother in Bourbon Co., KY. By 1800 they had moved to Campbell Co., KY, and by 1820 to Indiana. (Robert Gregg e-mail, 11/24/98)

The tax lists place Matthew Gregg in Campbell Co. in 1796 and 1800.  Mathew was tall, being 5 feet 11 inches in height, large boned and muscular. He was a free will Baptist minister and a farmer. He first applied for pension as a Revolutionary War veteran on 31 October 1818. He states that he can no longer farm and take care of himself. His wife can not take care of him either. His pension of $8.00/mongh began on 26 April 1818. Nancy may have been adopted and raised by the Lady Greystock on a James River, VA, plantation. (pg 38, James Lee Wignal, Following the Footprints in the Sands of Time)

On October 4, 1826, Mathew and Nancy deeded 25 acres of land on Four Mile Creek to their son, James Gregg of Rush Co., IN, for $200.00. This land adjoins land owned by Samuel Thompson. Following the sale of this land they moved to Rush Co., IN, where some of their other children had moved. Mathew and Nancy died at their son, John's, home on March 30, 1832, of Black Plague. The location of the grave is unknown.
