William Preston Harrison (1869-1940)
William Preston, son of Carter
Henry Harrison III, was born 12 April 1869 in Chicago, Illinois, and
died in 1940.
He followed in his father's and
brother's footsteps at first with a career in real estate. But
when his father purchased Chicago Timeshe turned to journalism, as
editor and publisher and foreign correspondent.
After his father was shot, he
escaped the pain by traveling overseas. While traveling overseas
he became a patron of the arts and after returning home he like the rest
of my family the Owsleys and the Harrisons became a benefactor of
the Art Institute of Chicago.
In 1915 he married Ada M. Sanberg returning
with her to Europe. and wintering in Los Angeles. In 1918 he,
listed his occupation as an art collector and became a major donor for
the county museum.
In 1921, he and his wife decided to make
Los Angeles their home, devoting their efforts as art patrons to the
museum. He and his wife are credit with donating the first
permanent art collection.
Ada was born in 1885 and died in 1947.
